Upcycle and Mend Series: T-Shirt Hacking
Upcycle and Mend Series: T-Shirt Hacking
Have you completed Sewing Machine Basics or have similar skills? You're ready to upcycle and mend with us! We'll focus on a new item each week. Choose one or choose them all
Turn everyday t-shirts (or sweatshirts) into something completely new in this creative upcycling sewing class. Participants will explore multiple design options, from dramatic batwing or boho-style sleeves created by adding fabric, to drafting and sewing new, more traditional sleeves for a refreshed fit.
You’ll also have the option to patchwork two or more t-shirts together, combining colors, textures, and graphics to create a one-of-a-kind garment. This class is all about experimentation, problem-solving, and learning how to work with knit fabrics in a low-pressure, supportive environment.
Because designs can vary in complexity, some projects may require homework to complete. If you don’t have access to a sewing machine at home, you’re welcome to book an Open Studio session with us to finish your creation.
Please note:
Bring shirts that are not your very favorites. Mistakes are part of the process, and practicing on low-risk pieces makes the experience more fun and freeing. We strongly encourage picking up a few t-shirts or sweatshirts from a thrift store so you have options to play with.
Participants will learn:
-
Sleeve redesign and fabric insertion techniques
-
Basic sleeve drafting and pattern modification
-
Patchworking knit fabrics together
-
Construction tips for t-shirts and sweatshirts
Please bring:
-
1–3 t-shirts or sweatshirts to upcycle. Optionally, you can bring the fabric you'd like to use for the sleeves, usually around a yard.
Sewing machines, tools, and guided instruction will be provided.
